Hello January!!!

It's a brand new year and I love the idea that the year is a lovely book of blank pages ready to be written in!

God has a plan for this year and while I have no idea what it is, I know that He will be right beside me no matter what. I listened to a radio Sunday morning service this morning, recorded by a friend from school (way back!!). He spoke about Emmanuel - God with us, and how that works in January when the Christmas decorations have been put away and the rooms feel empty, new year's resolutions are being made and broken, and normal life resumes. It was an interesting talk and really helped to focus my mind on starting my days with God, and actively inviting him into my days - every day.

Like always I have chosen a word for the year - breathe - and I’m so excited about taking the time to breathe with God this coming year. I’ve two key verses to focus on -

I am planning to take time this year to really stop, breathe and spend time with God, growing spiritually, physically and mentally. I am going to spend time becoming the best version of me, the woman God created me to be. I'm excited and hope you enjoy the journey with me!

Hello strangers...

I know - its been a while! Life has been a real roller-coaster and gone round and round in circles over the last 6 months. It's definitely been a challenge. But that's a story for another day!

So I'm back! It's the summer and I've ready to have lots of fun with family and friends. I'm really a bit sick of Covid19 spoiling all our plans, putting us back into lockdown after lockdown, but no matter what happens, I'm in the mood for some fun, food and fellowship!

The first thing I do want to do this summer is read some of the many books I've accumulated over the last few years! I love the feel of a real book so I treated myself and now have lots to read, highlight and absorb. The first is this wee gem:

I've heard quotes from this book in so many places so thought I'd just go straight to the source and just read the book. I've lots of wee trips to Lisburn planned for the summer for rugby training, so I plan to spend my waiting time reading this. I'll do a wee book review at the end of it, with my favourite quotes and lessons I've learnt.

The second thing I need to do - yes that's a NEED not a want!! - is to start moving more and actually eating the right stuff. I love food and I've been very honest on here about my issues around eating, but I have reached the point where I need to actually so everything that I know - and start to lose the extra weight I'm carrying.

I am not going on a diet. I'm not starting a particular exercise plan. I am simply changing my menu to include more fruit, vegetables and much less sugar and fat. And I am going to start walking.

So I'll let you know how I get on!

And the last thing, for now, is to make memories with my kids. We bought a 'Family Challenge Book' so we will be working through one challenge a week. The first one is to design 5 paper planes and have some races!! I'll let you know when I win!!!

So yes, while we won't get an actual holiday this year, we are determined to make memories and have fun!
Enjoy your summer!

New Year - New Goals

For the last 40 days of the year I hosted a ‘40 days to finishing well’ devotional with a group of friends to help us get ready for 2021. Based on 1 Thessalonians 5:12-18 we looked at how to rejoice, pray continually and give thanks in all circumstances, especially in view of 2020 and all that was thrown at us. It was such a joy to be able to work through these verses with this wonderful group of lovely ladies.

The last few days we looked at setting goals to help us grow in the New Year. Not New Year's resolutions - firstly they don’t work and secondly they are set in ancient pagan rituals, so we don’t want to go there! - goals to help us grow. There are several areas that I want to grow this year -

  • Spiritually

  • Emotionally

  • Physically

  • Personally

So my aim is to set goals in each area and work towards them. It has been interesting trying to narrow down my goals, but I know that as long as I make progress and keep my eyes fixed on God I’ll be doing ok!

So in January my goal is to spend quality time with God each morning, using prayer, worship and studying the Bible. I am also hoping to keep a gratitude diary, working through the 1000 gifts monthly guide. It is definitely a fun way to count our blessings.

I really would love to continue writing as well - but I’m not the most organised person in the world, so we’ll see how that goes!

So for now… Happy New Year!

It's been a while...

Wow! It has definitely been a while since I blogged! Life has been just as crazy as ever, with multiple enforced lock downs, including one when we all got Covid-19. We were all fine - it was like a bad flu except you can't taste or smell anything, and we have all recovered well. But it was still crazy.

Right now we are coming up to what will definitely be the strangest Christmas yet, with limits to family visits and how many people can actually get together.

So I decided to do another little devotional set - 40 days to finishing well. We started on Sunday past, and will continue right up to the end of 2020. Its set around 1 Thessalonians 5:12-18 and will hopefully help us to focus on God as we end the hardest of years.

I'll be posting the devotionals on here but probably not every day - it'll maybe be a couple at once - as I'm definitely not that organised!

Apart from that I hope you all are well here in Blogland and I will speak to you soon!

A musical message!

This song really struck a chord with me when I was looking at this. The words are so true. Especially in light of yesterday's post. Enjoy.

You didn't ask for this

Nobody ever would

Caught in the middle of this dysfunction

It's your sad reality

It's your messed up family tree

And all your left with all these questions

Are you gonna be like your father was and his father was?

Do you have to carry what they've handed down?

No, this is not your legacy

This is not your destiny

Yesterday does not define you

No, this is not your legacy

This is not your meant to be

I can break the chains that bind you

I have a dream for you

It's better than where you've been

It's bigger than your imagination

You're gonna find real love

And you're gonna hold your kids

You'll change the course of generations

No, this is not your legacy

This is not your destiny

Yesterday does not define you

No, this is not your legacy

This is not your meant to be

I can break the chains that bind you

'Cause you're my child

You're my chosen

You are loved

You are loved

And I will restore

All that was broken

You are loved

You are loved

And just like the seasons change

Winter into spring

You're bringing new life to your family tree now

Yes you are

You are

Oh, this will be your legacy

This will be your destiny

Yesterday did not define you

Oh, this will be your legacy

This will be your meant to be

I can break the chains that bind you

And just like the seasons change

Winter into spring

You're bringing new life to your family tree now

Matthew West - Family Tree

The legacy we live with...

So what about our lives now? What in our every day lives are things we do just because our parents did them? Or what do we not do because it just wasn't done that way?

Each of us has had very different upbringings. And that's not a bad thing. After all, if we were all the same life would get very boring very quickly!

When I look at my boys and the legacy they are coming into, I need to look at both our families. My mum was brought up to be a strong woman. Her father passed away when she was only 10 and as the only girl with 3 brothers, she had to do a lot. Then after she had me and my sister, she was on her own with us, and again had to be stronger than she should have had to be. Finally, after my wee sister was born, she had to extra strong as she fought to get her the help and care she needed, after the doctors told us she would never walk or talk.

So I come from a legacy left by a very strong woman. Maybe even too strong. She doesn't get help offered when she actually needs it because she has been so strong in the past. I am in awe of her constantly.

On the other side, my husband's family is very male dominated. He is from a footballing family - a family where his uncle and his dad were involved in football at a high level. Then there were six of them - all boys - and all of them have been footballers at some point and to a good level. So there's a lot of maleness in the family!

So it's a real mix of fun in our house!

There are things in our family that we have had to have discussions about - like the fact that one family eats Christmas dinner at 1pm, while the other usually has it around 3pm. Not a big problem, I hear you say, but then try to fit going to both houses on Christmas Day, and we ended up eating two Christmas lunches!

This is one specific example, but there are millions of these little decisions every single day. Our job is to navigate and compromise these to make our family legacy different, and a mixture of both.

But sometimes the legacy you receive from your parents isn't as easy to live with. If you had a parent who grew up in a broken home, or with abusive parents, they can easily fall into that trap again and do the same to you. You then have the decision to follow in their footsteps or change the story.

Or maybe you had a parent who was addicted to alcohol or drugs, or who was depressed or struggled with anger, you have to decide to stop the cycle and turn the legacy around. It may be hard, especially if your family struggles with addiction, but it will be worth it. You get to decide on a brand new legacy for the next generation.

There is someone who can help - no matter what your past or legacy - Christ comes in and changes everything. He gives us the strength to put the old things away and build new practices and new life. Tomorrow we will talk about leaving the best legacy for the next generation.

Our spiritual legacy

Genealogies are very important in the Bible. There are chapters upon chapters of what we look at as 'lists of boring names' but which are all there for a particular purpose. For instance -

  • Genesis 5:1-32 gives us the family line from Adam to the children of Noah
  • Genesis 10 tells us about their descendants after the flood
  • Ruth 4:18-22 explains where Boaz comes into the family line of David
  • 1 Chronicles has 10 chapters telling us about each of the tribes of Israel
  • Matthew 1:1-17 has the route from Abraham right through to Jesus - Joseph's line
  •  Luke 3:23-28 through the linage of Mary

Biblical genealogies tell us a lot of things - they tell us that God is interested in history, it shows us He is interested in the family lines that we are born into ( every line) and it shows us that He uses insignificant and flawed people in the most famous genealogy of all. One article I read mentioned the following examples -

The Genealogy of Jesus in Matthew 1 records several people with well-known sins:

  • Jacob, stealing brother’s birthright (who is mentioned in Matthew 1:2)
  • Rahab, who was a prostitute (mentioned in Matthew 1:5)
  • David, committed adultery and murder (mentioned in Matthew 1:6)
  • Solomon, disobeyed God by taking foreign wives and storing up earthly riches (mentioned in Matthew 1:6-7)
Genealogies are also important for helping us to see prophecies fulfilled. Look at the linage of Jesus -

  • Luke 3:36 tells us Jesus was 'the son of Shem', fulfilling Genesis 9:26,27
  • Matthew 1:1 tells us He is the 'son of Abraham' fulfilling Genesis 12:1-3
  • Matthew 1;1,2 tells us 'Abraham begot Isaac' fulfilling Genesis 26:3,4
  • Matthew 1:1,2 also says 'Isaac begot Jacob' fulfilling Genesis 35:11,12
  • Matthew 1:1 also says 'son of David' fulfilling 2 Samuel 7:12
How amazing is it to see God's Words come to pass!

But Jesus isn't the only one in the Bible who has an interesting genealogy and these two couldn't be more different!

Firstly Saul - he was a Roman citizen and in Acts 23:6 describes himself as a 'Pharisee, as were my ancestors!' and his mission - 'how I violently persecuted God’s church. I did my best to destroy it.' But God intervened in amazing ways to turn his ancestors' legacy into something he could use to share Christianity with the world.

And then we have Timothy -

He was given the greatest legacy by his grandmother - the gift of knowing God. She had a faith worthy of a mention by one of the greatest men of faith. And she shared it with her family. One of the biggest things we can do is share God. We have a gift that will keep giving long after we are gone - a gift of life for all eternity, and a gift of hope for the future. We need to share it.

And of course the last five words - 'dwells in you as well' - Timothy took his grandmother's legacy and went forward really serving God with his heart and life.

And if you haven't got a legacy like that to start on?

Hebrews 12:1 says:

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses,
let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles,
and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.”

We have a multitude of great warriors of faith who have run this race already and had victory in God. We can take their legacy and use it to spring forward and run our race - so if you think your legacy isn't going to help you, read through Hebrews 11 and step out with confidence that the God who helped each of those amazing men and women of faith, is the same God who loves you and wants to help you!
