This weekend Storm Ciara is due to descend on our wee country. The whole country has an amber warning for high winds, with winds of 80 to 90 mph expected in places. Storms are dangerous. They can cause utter devastation. The last time we had a storm - the end of Hurricane Ophelia - we had trampolines rolling down main roads, and friends had fences flying across their gardens. I know there are a lot of countries that have it far worse than us, but when there's a storm it can be quite scary.
This morning I was reading about a storm in the book of Matthew. In chapter 14 we read the story of when the disciples were out in a boat and a strong wind arose, causing very heavy waves. They were all afraid. Jesus walked out on the water towards them, and told them to 'not be afraid' (v31). Peter wanted to walk out to meet Jesus, and as long as he kept his eyes focused on the Saviour he stayed strong and steady. But the moment he looked away and saw the wind and the waves he was terrified and began to sink. Jesus saved him, of course, but the point was that when he took his eyes and focus off Jesus, the situation around him overwhelmed him and he began to sink into it.
Life can be that way too. Life can be hard. I've been open about my struggle with depression and I have had times in my life where I've been overwhelmed. But I've noticed something in common with each of these times. Each time I've been totally overwhelmed, I've taken my eyes off God. I've been too focused on everything I have to do or everything that's going on around me. I looked at the wind and the waves and began to sink.
Jesus is an amazing source of strength. He is always with us. We never have to walk through anything alone. I mean it - He is amazing. And if we focus our eyes on Him, we will never sink.
God is good
All the time
All the time
God is good
No matter what we walk through or what doubts we have, all we have to do is focus on the King of Kings.
