Indescribable...

Indescribable
Uncontainable
You placed the stars in the sky, and You know them by name
You are amazing God.

As I was driving home today one of my favourite songs came on - Indescribable by Chris Tomlin. This is one of those songs that you turn right up and sing along with at the top of your voice… especially when there’s no-one near you!! The words are amazing. They lift me up every single time. They remind me of how great God is and how much He actually does love me.

When I think about God creating the universe, placing each star into it’s own place in the boundless vacuum of space, I am totally in awe. I love to gaze up at the stars in the sky, amazing balls of gas millions and billions of miles away. But even then, realistically we can only see about 3000 stars with our naked eyes. That’s 3000 out of the estimated 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 stars in the universe. Yes – that’s 24 zeroes!! That’s a lot of stars!

But God knows every one of them. Psalm 147 v 4 says “He counts the stars and calls them all by name”. If the God of the universe knows all of that, why would He be interested in little old me? I mean, the stars are amazing. But even after He’d created each star, given it a name and put it into space, He still wanted to create us. He wanted us to communicate with Him and worship Him.

God says in Isaiah 43, in verse 1 “I have called you by name; you are mine”. In chapter 49 we read “The Lord called me before my birth; from within the womb he called me by name”. God knows us. He knows everything about us. He knows what I say, what I do and what I think. He knows when I succeed and when I fail. We are even told that the “…very hairs on your head are numbered” (Matthew 10:30). How amazing is that!

He cares. He really cares. And He wants me to tell Him about every single part of my life – from the mundane to the exciting. From the good to the bad. From the things that make Him rejoice, to the things I’d rather He didn’t see at all. There is a line at the end of the song that breaks my heart every time I sing it.

Incomparable
Unchangeable
You see the depths of my heart, and You love me the same
You are amazing God.

He sees deep within my heart – to the things I would rather keep hidden from everyone, but especially from Him. He sees the things I am deeply ashamed of; He sees the things I’ve done in secret; He sees the thoughts I’ve had that would destroy me. He’s seen it all.

BUT it makes no difference. He loves me just as much as if I was perfect. Just think about that! Nothing I can do will make Him love me more or less than He does right now. And I am so thankful for that truth. Because I’m human, flawed, sinful and living for my own desires, even though I long to be more like Him. His love is amazing. Truly unbelievable. Truly indescribable.

Keep shining xxx
